The 4th Annual Lundin Kudo Empty Bowls Project took place today at St Mary’s. The crowd and the bowls were impressive and colorful…

$15 got you a handcrafted bowl by local artists, soup, and bread. Perfect for a cold florida day…

Back on Feb 3rd, I visited the Garden of Goods Gallery in Hobe Sound where the artists created their masterpiece bowls. You can jump to that post over on the right hand side under recent posts.

I think Jade liked the soup.
Here is the bowl I picked out by Georgeann Braden.

On January 15, I met Steve Schafer for the first time. He was attending the opening of his late father’s art exhibit at the Court House Cultural Center in Stuart, FL.

Steve was signing books about his father (by Author Bion Bierer), talking about his fathers work, and meeting up with his friends who came out to see and support the exhibit.

I had never met Steve before this night, but my wife and many other friends and family knew him very well. This is a common theme in our small town, so many have grown up together.
When he had a free moment, I asked him if I could make a portrait of him in front of one of his father’s larger paintings, I felt it was a good way to connect him to his father. He graciously agreed, and I had this wonderful image of Steve…

Steve and I had some time to chat after the picture, and I was able to learn a few things about him. At the time I was glad I took the time to meet him, but I had no idea that this image would be so important just 3 weeks later. On Feb 3rd, a shark killed him while he was kiteboarding in Stuart, and the image became part of a national headline.
Following his death, a stunned community rallied to stage an amazing tribute to him at the beach where he was attacked. Over 100 of his friends paddled out on surf and paddle boards to pay tribute to their friend. It was a very impressive and emotional ceremony. Eric Hassert, from our local newspaper, took an amazing image from the air which tells part of the story. I included the link to the the image at the very bottom of this post.
The crowds on the beach were the other half of the story…

I wish I would have known Steve, he was loved by so many.

I placed the portrait at the spot where he stood…

Flowers placed outside of St Mary’s Church after the funeral service.

This is my connection to Steve Schafer, I am glad I have one, like so many others.

I had the pleasure of making images today of Joseph Marmo, a local artist who is making a come back of sorts to the local art scene.

Joe was the featured artist at the opening of Alizarin Crimson Studio & Gallery 25 years ago. He went on to open a downtown Stuart art gallery right next to the old Ashley, which at one time he owned with his wife. He created The Ashley’s beautiful glass work.
He has a wonderful creative space in his home filled with his art and glass work.

Notice the details….

Joe and his art went silent for a while, but now he is resurfacing back at the spot he started with an exhibit at Georgia Abood’s Alizarin Chrimson Studio on 1st Thursday Feb 4th. Joe is a good story, and a wonderful artist. We welcome him back to the art community.

This morning started the day with friends Steve and Vada, 2 other local visual artists I met up with for breakfast at the Osceaola Street Cafe. It’s always great to share ideas, talk about projects, and eat a hearty breakfast.
Afterwards I went over the Stuart Boat Show for a bit…I like riding that downtown trolly..

On air celebs Gary and Robin doing their thing….
Stopped in to see my favorite models Kimberly and Kristy for a little sassy fix….
Last stop was over to the WaterPoint Realty Booth to see if my giant prints made their space look good… It seems that way…

At 5PM, it was the Howard Schafer Book Signing & Reception at the Court House Cultural Center Galleries…..
…first the ribbon cutting cermony for the gallery renovations and the donors that gave generously to make it happen. Members of the Martin County Community Foundation and others where on hand with the big scissor. Fortunately, no one got stabbed.

The reception for Howard Schafer’s, and the book signing by author Bion B. Bierer began immediately aftewards.

It was a fabulous 3 hr turnout.

You can view all the images from the reception with the link at the bottom of today’s blog..
After the reception, I walked over to Music Fest to check it out. It’s a cool event, kid friendly, well attended..

Finally, I walked over to a new gallery on Osceola Street – Osceola32. They had a artist featured that paints watercolor with a pallet knife – Marian Christy.
Over there I met Gary Jamison, a cool guy who I have run into before around town. I guess I looked all geared up, so he challenged me to make him look good with one shot. I took him on….

This past 1st Thursday, The Alizarin Crimson Art Studio hosted a reception for local artist Nancy Steinberg.

I have known Nancy for some time now, and I have watched her art really progress over the last few years. She is one of the artists that I create Giclee prints for.

I wish Nancy and her art the best, she is a great local talent.

Thelma Washington over at the Gertrude Walden Child Care Center called me last week to photograph their annual “Breakfast with Santa”. I guess doing it for the last few years now counts as a tradition, and I was happy to hear from her. The kids are a lot of fun, and always curious about the picture taking.

The kids carefully watched as Santa walked in and sat down…

Thelma and some of her kids with Santa….

I think someone has to cut back on the cookies…
